Choosing a central air conditioner can be a daunting experience. In this article, we’re going to try our best to make it easier.

Clearwater air conditioning needs, like the rest of Florida, differ from other parts of the United States. As such, a Clearwater air conditioner installation is going to necessitate a little local knowledge. The humidity down here can be tough, for instance, and we all know the rains aren’t exactly predictable.

Realistically, someone who’s been doing installations primarily in Colorado or Pennsylvania may not know what the best features for a Florida residential air conditioner would be.

When you’re shopping for an air conditioning system for your home, you’re going to hear about added features. A lot. Depending on whom you’re talking to, you might be inundated with information on all the things that modern air conditioners can do.

That's because, as industry professionals, we’re all passionate about our craft and excited to share it with you. That doesn’t mean that every feature out there is necessary, or even right for your home.

However, we can, with confidence, tell you about the features that offer added value to any home. Without further ado, we present to you our HVAC TOP FIVE!

Number 5: UV Air Purification

Take a deep breath. Now take another. Wasn’t that nice? Wouldn’t you like to be able to do that in the comfort of your own home without worrying about pollutants, irritants, cigarette smoke, and so on? A UV (Ultraviolet) air purification system uses light to combat germs and pollutants in your home.

They’re useful, and the prices of your installation don’t go skyrocketing when you add one. They typically mount within your duct or AC system, and they’ve been shown to destroy odors, as well as viruses, mold, and mildew. Make sure that you look for a purifier that doesn’t produce ozone, which is an irritant all by itself.

Number 4: HEPA Filtration

Essentially another kind of air purification system, HEPA filters physically remove particulates from your home’s circulating air. Floridians aren’t always the indoor types, but in Clearwater, air conditioning is a lifesaver in the spring and summer. You want to know that your air is clean.

A HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter will manually remove pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and mold spores from your home. We don’t make any health claims here – that’s for other people to do – but we’re positive that clean air can’t hurt you. And for clean air, HEPA filtration is the gold standard.

Of course, HEPA filters have … well, filters … they will need to replaced or cleaned periodically. However, we consider that a small price to pay for the peace of mind that comes with clean air.

Number 3: Wi-Fi Thermostat

We live in a connected world, folks. If you wanted to, you could watch a guy in Belarus juggle on Facebook live, stream your favorite Charlie Chaplin movies, or call your friend on their vacation in Tokyo, all without getting off of your cell phone.

It stands to reason that you’d want your phone to control the finer aspects of your home, as well – and a Wi-Fi capable thermostat does just that. When you live in Clearwater, air conditioners need to be on before you walk in the door, or your home is a greenhouse for the first half hour you’re there.

And while traditional thermostats will let you maintain a reasonable temperature, it can be expensive to do that, and you can’t change the settings without being there. With a Wi-Fi thermostat, you could hop on your phone, crank the AC up from power saver mode before you head home from work, and walk in the door to find your home already the perfect temperature.

And with a Wi-Fi thermostat, you aren’t spending a fortune on energy bills to make that possible. Smart thermostats even learn from your habits, and adjust themselves automatically to compensate for humidity issues. Best of all, for those of us who forget – or struggle – to program our thermostats manually, a Wi-Fi stat will really save you some change. Essentially: there’s an app for that.

Number 2: A two-Stage System

See what we did there? Number 2 is a two-stage system. The two main selling points of a two-stage system are A) that it will save you money, and B) that it make your home more comfortable. The difference is in the compressor: In a normal air conditioner, you get a binary setup; your system is either ON or OFF.

When it’s on, it cycles up to full power, whether that much power is necessary or not. With a two-stage system, a LOW power setting is added to the compressor, allowing it to automatically decide whether full power is required to cool your home. This allows the entire system to run more efficiently.

Even though it costs more upfront, it’s very affordable when you realize that it can pay for itself in just a few short years.

Number 1: A Variable Speed Air Handler

Your air handler is the indoor unit of your central air conditioner. It pairs exceptionally well with a two-stage compressor, and automatically adjusts the amount of air flowing into the home. This is another piece of technology that is dedicated to reducing the amount of electricity required to cool your home.

As such, we consider it one of the smartest buys in the HVAC world. You get a smaller carbon footprint and a greater degree of comfort. Variable speed air handlers are also quieter, as they don’t cycle on and off the way normal air handlers do.

They even strengthen the efforts of your air filtration system and dehumidifier, since air never stops moving.

Clearwater air conditioning features are always worth considering, and these 5 should be at the top of your list.
